To celebrate their 25th anniversary, the Bang on a Can All-Stars are giving their new album, Big Beautiful Dark and Scary, away for free for the first 25 days of January.

To obtain the record – the group’s first studio album in five years – as a free download, listeners must simply donate a Bang on a Can memory, thought or story, to be displayed online at

The new double LP features premiere recordings of music by Louis Andriessen (with a film), Dirty Projectors’ David Longstreth, Conlon Nancarrow, Kate Moore, Evan Ziporyn, and Bang on a Can founders Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe.

After the giveaway period, which ends on 25 January, the album will be made available from 31 January to 27 February on iTunes for $5.99 – including an exclusive bonus track, a live recording of Philip Glass’ Closing performed by Glass and the All-Stars – before its physical release date of 28 February.

As well as featuring numerous brand new works, Big Beautiful Dark and Scary is the first showcasing of the Bang on a Can All-Stars’ current line-up – Ashley Bathgate, cello; Robert Black, bass; Vicky Chow, piano; David Cossin, percussion; Mark Stewart, electric guitar, and Evan Ziporyn, clarinets.

It is also the first album in a decade that features the All-Stars exclusively, rather than as part of a collaborative project.
