Awards recognise emerging British composition talent
The awards have an open nomination policy, which ensures that the
submissions are as diverse as possible. Young names such as John
Holland, Luke Bedford and Joe Cutler feature on the latest list
alongside established composers including Judith Bingham, James
MacMillan, Kaija Saariaho and Elliot Carter.
This year 268 nominations were received for works that premiered
between 1 April 2007 and 31 March 2008. A panel of more than 60
music professionals selected three works in each of 11 categories.
Sarah Rodgers, concert chair of the BACS, said: 'Entries for
the awards this year were one of the strongest sets we have
received and this is reflected in the list of nominees - an
exceptional year and by no means dominated by familiar names. This
is the British Composer Awards working at its very best,
discovering emerging talent alongside established creativity.'
Winners will be announced at the 2008 British Composer Awards
ceremony, which will take place on 2 December at the Law Society in
London.
A special programme devoted to the awards will also be broadcast on
BBC Radio 3's In Tune programme at 7.00pm on 3 December.
