Four Orchestral Pieces/Hungarian Peasant Songs
Orchestra: London Philharmonic Orchestra
Condctor: Leon Botstein
Label: Telarc
CD No: 80564
Leon Botstein's trademark of innovative programming and
uncovering unusual repertoire is represented beautifully on this
CD.
Botstein incorporates Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra with the
lesser-performed Four Orchestral Pieces for Orchestra Op 12, and
contrasts his Hungarian Peasant Songs with the grandeur of the folk
songs in the concerto. To finish, the LPO plays the alternative
ending that Bartok wrote for the Concerto for Orchestra.
Botstein's demanding style of conducting is thoroughly
enjoyable and I feel this matches Bartok's intentions for the
piece. Botstein doesn't shy away from Bartok's treatment of
folksong in the concerto, thus portrayed confidently and
interpreting the piece at his will.
This is a very moving performance of an inventive programme choice
- an essential CD to add to your collection, or as an introduction
to Bartok. Jennifer Hewitt
