BBC seeks amateurs for Pianothon concerts

UK
19 August 2008
THE BBC IS SEEKING AMATEUR PIANISTS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO PERFORM AT A SERIES OF INFORMAL PUBLIC CONCERTS.

Pianothons - open to pianists of all ages and abilities - take place in October in Belfast, Glasgow, Cardiff, London and Manchester. Participants may have their performances broadcast on BBC Radio 3, which will run highlights of the series as part of its Play to the Nation celebration of amateur music.

Each Pianothon, which will last around eight hours, will consist of continuous playing from the chosen participants, who will play in sequence. The pianists can perform any piece for solo, duo or six hands, providing it does not exceed 10 minutes.

Radio 3 presenters Iain Burnside, Sean Rafferty, Fiona Talkington, Petroc Trelawny and Sarah Walker will host the event and there will also be a masterclass with top professional pianists open to anyone taking part.

Entries are accepted up to two weeks prior to the event. To register visit www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/classical/pianothon.

Saturday 11 October - Cardiff Millennium Centre (Tesco Stage)
Saturday 11 October - Glasgow Mitchell Library (Jeffrey Library)
