Hungarian Dances Nos 2 & 4-9
Orchestra: London Philharmonic Orchestra
Conductor: Marin Alsop
Label: Naxos
CD No: 8.570233
The award-winning Marin Alsop is no stranger to conducting the
London Philharmonic and is certainly not a stranger to the works of
Brahms, having conducted his complete symphonies and overtures for
the Naxos label.
Not only has Marin won awards such as the 2005 MacArthur Fellowship
Prize and Classical BRIT Female Artist of the Year, but she also
made history when she became the first female conductor to lead a
major orchestra in 2005. She also embarking on the huge project of
recording the complete works of Brahms.
In this recital Alsop incorporates the fourth symphony with a
selection of Hungarian Dances, nos 2 and 4-9.
I feel that the diverse colour and combination of flavours explored
in a Brahms orchestral work are lacking in this recital, and after
listening to the CD I was left wanting more. I also feel Alsop
lacks the drive required to explore the realms of romanticism that
oozes from a work by Brahms, and I was left disappointed.
Overall I feel this CD is a pleasurable, but not memorably moving,
listening experience. Jennifer Hewitt
