Charlie Siem does a Black Cab Session
Chris Horkan unspins classical music online
11th August - 12:03Last year we featured violinist Charles Siem in our G Spot section. Aged just 20, we called him 'a baby on the British classical music scene - and he's also a bit of a babe'.
Back then, he'd already appeared with the Royal Phil and
London Mozart Players, and participated in the Spoleto and Windsor
festivals, among others. Suitably impressed, we returned to Charlie
(as he's now known) earlier this year to talk about his debut
disc of Elgar and Grieg sonatas. As well as graduating from
Cambridge, he also had a Black Cab Session lined up:
'The guys who run the sessions already had one session with a classical cellist [ Jonny Myers], loved it, and wanted to do more. I was rather attracted by the challenge that it presented. Of course I'll choose something as technically demanding as I can to see how far I can push it. It should be a laugh!'
He wasn't kidding when he said technically demanding - a selection of Paganini Variations in the back of a moving cab, anyone? And he doesn't even have the luxury of a seat... his bow kept hitting the roof so he sat on the floor for the five-minute recording. Check out the rather impressive - and exhausting - results below.
