Details for the 2010 PRS New Music Award announced
The 2010 instalment of the PRS Foundation's biennial
New Music
Award, once termed the Turner Prize of the music world, will be
welcoming applications from September 10, 2009.
The coveted prize of £50,000 is the most
significant financial award available in new music. The sum is
awarded by the foundation every other year to a project that is
deemed to push musical boundaries. The award money must be used to
realise the proposed idea.
Proposals may be submitted by anyone, whether individual, band or
organisation. Applications must be submitted by the deadline of
January 8, 2010.
Last year's winner was The Fragmented Orchestra, an ambitious
project that sought to explore the way the human brain experiences
sound. A 'nerve centre' was installed in Liverpool's
FACT gallery to receive impulses and signals from various
'nodes' placed in 24 locations nationwide, meaning
passers-by from Brighton to Aberdeen could both knowingly and
unknowingly contribute sound and music to the ever-evolving,
collaborative composition.
The New Music Award is one of many support schemes offered by the
PRS Foundation, which is the largest independent funder of new
music of all genres.
