WHEN MOST PEOPLE THINK OF AGRICULTURE, THE LAST THING THAT COMES TO MIND IS SONIC AESTHETIC – BUT AN INNOVATIVE NEW PROJECT BY FINNISH ACCORDIONIST AND COMPOSER KIMMO POHJONEN COULD CHANGE THAT.

This month Pohjonen, dubbed 'the Hendrix of the accordion', will collaborate with local farmers at four UK locations as part of his Earth Machine Music tour, supported by Arts Council England, the Finnish Institute and media partner Farmers Weekly.

The accordion adventurist will visit each site beforehand to record sample material from agricultural machinery including tractors, milking machines, threshers, with farmers invited to 'play' their hardware.

He will then head to Finland to compose new music inspired by these sounds, before returning to the UK for the tour.

The Earth Machine Music dates also include a range of additional activities, including farm trails, a hog roast barbecue and an exhibition of vintage tractors.

The tour begins on 11 May at Bury St Edmunds Festival, with Pohjonen also performing in West Sussex, North Devon and Oxfordshire. Audiences are advised to wear suitable shoes or boots and warm clothing.
