Verbier Festival’s youth programme secured

International
22 July 2008
THE FUTURE OF THE VERBIER FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA’S (VFO) YOUNG MUSICIAN TRAINING PROGRAMME HAS BEEN SECURED AFTER THE SWISS FESTIVAL VOWED TO TAKE DIRECT CONTROL FROM 2009.

The scheme's future has hung in the balance since bankers UBS withdrew its financial support earlier this year. VFO will offer the same programme that has been in place for almost a decade, bringing together 100 musicians under the age of 30 from around the world for a six-week summer course.

American conductor James Levine will continue to offer his support, with coaching also provided by members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York, as well as selected musicians from conservatoires in Sion, Lausanne and Geneva.

Lessons - including in career management and stage presence - will be added to the programme in association with the Verbier Festival Academy, but international tours will be initially suspended due to their cost.

The 15th edition of the Verbier Festival began on 18 July and runs until 3 August. For more information visit www.verbierfestival.com.
