Beethoven Piano Sonatas (Track 2 – Piano Sonata No 8 in C Minor, 'Pathétique')
Jonathan BissEMI Classics
Born in 1980, American pianist Jonathan Biss already has an
impressive musical career behind him. He's worked with
world-leading orchestras in America and Europe and performed under
legendary conductors including Daniel Barenboim, Lorin Maazel,
Leonard Slatkin, Michael Tilson-Thomas… the list goes on.
Biss' debut recording of Schumann, released in early 2006, was
widely and warmly acclaimed. His third recording for EMI is a
second disc of Beethoven sonatas (the first was released in autumn
2006). It reveals the pianist as an assured interpreter of
Beethoven, showcasing a fluency and nimble-fingered command of the
music.
Biss comes from a family of professional musicians that includes
his grandmother Raya Garbousova (for whom Samuel Barber composed
his Cello Concerto) as well as his parents, violinists Miriam Fried
and Paul Biss.
He has won various awards including the Gilmore Young Artist Award,
an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Awards.
He was also the first American chosen to participate in the
BBC's New Generation Artists programme.
