City students complete Iran excursion

UK
24 July 2008
SIX STUDENTS FROM CITY UNIVERSITY LONDON’S DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC HAVE RETURNED FROM AN EDUCATIONAL VISIT TO IRAN, WHERE THEY IMMERSED THEMSELVES IN THE COUNTRY’S CULTURE AND MUSICAL TRADITIONS.

The students were Misty Brunton, John Papdatos, Gaby Messender, Luke Shrewsbury and Hannah Norbury from the department's BMus music programme and PhD student Corolyn Landau. Their trip was funded by the university's alumni annual fund.

Led by Laudan Nooshin, the party spent 10 days in the country, visiting their counterparts at the University of Tehran and spending five days in the capital, before attending rehearsals and performances in the historic cities of Shiraz and Isfahan.

'For the students whose first visit it was [to Iran], their experience was very different from what they expected, given the negative media representations of Iran in the UK,' Nooshin told Muso. 'They found a deeply rooted culture, an extremely hospitable and warm people and a vibrant society.'

'We were lucky enough to speak to a few students and watch them perform, and it really reminded me that students across the globe are the same,' added undergraduate student Messender. 'Whatever country you study in, everyone has the same worries about money, grades and friendship. I think that - considering the current political climate - now is possibly the most important time to realise that.'
