This yummy Yugoslav's recording of contemporary pieces,
Gestures, became one of the fastest-selling classical discs ever in
his native Croatia and led to him being invited to open the Porin
award ceremony (Croatia's Grammies) - a slot usually reserved
for rock acts. He was then signed to EMI Classics.
Mrvica (pronounced 'Máravitsa', with a rolled
'r') dresses like a model and has looks to match. But
he's also a formidable talent - winner of the Nicolai
Rubinstein competition in 1999, in 2000 he moved to Paris to study
with Igor Lazko.
But Croatian interest in its prodigy son was Maksimised and he
returned to launch Gestures in a 2,000-capacity Zagreb show that
included a laser display, dry-ice and a video wall. For the second
half Maksim ditched the lasers, donned a suit and rattled off
Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto. Lasers or not, that's
flashy.
