This autumn sees the launch of a DVD series by the Masterclass Media Foundation. Their aim over the next five years is to record around 200 hours of masterclasses and make them available to study and enjoy. The impressive list of musicians due to take part includes Bernard Haitink, Evelyn Glennie, Stephen Hough and Thomas Quasthoff, to name a few.
Among the first of the DVDs to be released is a masterclass given by violinist Maxim Vengerov. Filmed at the Royal Academy of Music, Vengerov advises several advanced students on their interpretations of the Mendelssohn, Sibelius and third Mozart concertos, as well as popular works by Bach, Beethoven and Ravel. Never short of things to say, the master interrupts his pupils every few bars to offer advice and guidance on how to enhance their performances.
Vengerov's suggestions are generally insightful and intelligent as he frequently abandons musical terms in favour of metaphors and expressive sentiments. For example, when discussing Ravel's Tzigane he likens a certain passage to the flirtatious gestures of a beautiful flamenco dancer.
If subsequent releases are of similar quality to the Vengerov masterclass then this series will be one to watch out for. Phil Sizer
