The new Foundation Degree in popular music practice is the fruit
of a new partnership with contemporary music educationalists Access
to Music. The course parallels the training traditionally offered
to those in the classical music arena and is aimed at high-level
young musicians (aged 18 and over) who intend to work in a session
or freelance capacity.
Endorsees of the course include guitarist Snake Davis - renowned
for his session work with Lisa Stansfield, M-People and Take That -
and the Prodigy's Jim Davis, both of whom will visit the
conservatoire to share their experiences with students.
'Back in my younger days there was nothing like this,' said
Davis. 'It was generally assumed that if you were outside of
classical music you had to sort it out for yourself. I firmly
believe that this stuff can be taught, and that all musicians going
into the music business should receive business advice.'
The course's director Andy Stott added: 'We have the opportunity to be pioneers, creating something very special here. Our students can expect a conservatoire standard education with all of the benefits of studying at the Royal Northern College of Music.'
