CELLO VIRTUOSO YO-YO MA HAS BEEN NAMED AS MUSICAL AMERICA’S MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 2008.

A master of the traditional repertoire, the Chinese-American musician has also explored jazz and folk, and has released over 75 albums, including 15 that have won Grammy Awards.

This year's Ensemble of the Year is the Pacifica Quartet, a group committed to performing both modern and overlooked repertoire. A champion of the Elliot Carter's string quartets, the Illinois-based quartet will finish recording the complete cycle for Naxos this season.

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Marin Alsop was named Conductor of the Year to honour her success as the first female music director of a large-budget, full-season American orchestra.

Musical America also named mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe as Vocalist of the Year and Christopher Rouse as Composer of the Year.
