Nupen portrait for Royal Academy pianist

UK
09 April 2008
DOCUMENTARY MAKER CHRISTOPHER NUPEN WILL COMPLETE HIS SERIES OF FILMS DEDICATED TO GIFTED YOUNG ARTISTS WITH A PROFILE OF JORDANIAN PIANIST KARIM SAID.

Nupen, who has previously produced portraits of Daniel Barenboim, Evgeny Kissin and Jacqueline du Pré, will premiere Karim's Journey on 1 May at Barbican Cinema One. It will be preceded by an introduction by the director and followed by a short recital by the London-based pianist (pictured).

Nineteen-year-old Said was born in Amman, Jordan and began playing the piano aged five. The protégé of Daniel Barenboim studied at the Purcell School in Hertfordshire for seven years and is now in his first year at the Royal Academy of Music.

Nupen was introduced to him at the age of 11 by Barenboim and, impressed by his skill and personality, proposed a long-term project to follow his development. Karim's Journey was shot in six countries over a seven-year period.

Nupen began making films in 1966 and has since claimed numerous accolades, including his third DVD of the Year Award in four years at the industry conference Midem in January. The 73-year-old's second film, Jacqueline du Pré in Portrait, was the biggest-selling classical DVD in 2004 and won DVD of the Year at Cannes in 2005.

BBC Four will pay tribute to the director this summer with broadcasts of his documentary series - including the UK television premieres of Nathan Milstein: Master of Invention and Karim's Journey.
