Pianist Schiff to receive Wigmore Hall medal

UK
09 September 2008
PIANIST ANDRáS SCHIFF WILL BE PRESENTED WITH THE 2008 WIGMORE MEDAL AT THE LONDON VENUE THIS EVENING.

The 54-year-old, who was born in Budapest, Hungary and holds British citizenship, follows in the footsteps of Matthias Goerne, the baritone who scooped the inaugural award last year. He will receive a medal designed and made by artist Irene Gunston.

The Wigmore Medal recognises major international artists and significant figures in the classical music world, and particularly those who make a significant contribution to the recital venue. The recipient is selected by the director of the hall, Irish singer John Gilhooly.

'For over a century the hall has grown and prospered, thanks to a great number of artists who have performed here and the audiences who have listened to them,' said Gilhooly. 'Some of these artists, like András Schiff, made their London recital debut here, and Wigmore audiences have taken them to their hearts by following their progress and encouraging them along the way.'

Schiff, who is known for his interpretations of Bach, Schubert and Robert Schumann, has previously claimed the Royal Academy of Music's Bach Prize and a Grammy Award.
