Rap fan prefers court fine to classical music

US and Canada
10 October 2008
A RAP MUSIC FAN WHO WAS OFFERED THE CHANCE TO LISTEN TO 20 HOURS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC RATHER THAN PAY A FINE HAD SECOND THOUGHTS AFTER JUST 15 MINUTES.

Andrew Vactor, 24 and from Ohio, USA, originally faced a $150 (£90) fine at Champaign County Municipal Court for 'rap cruising' - but judge Fornof-Lippencott offered to reduce charges to $35 if he agreed to broaden his musical horizons with Brahms, Beethoven and Chopin.

Vactor originally attempted to complete the feat but lasted just 15 minutes with the headphones before escaping to play for his university basketball team.

'I didn't have the time to deal with that,' he said aftwards. 'I just decided to pay the fine.'

Fornof-Lippencott said she hoped the idea would force Vactor to listen to something he might not normally listen to, just as many people do when they pass his car.

'I think a lot of people don't like to be forced to listen to music,' she reflected.
