Royal Philharmonic appears on US television
A gala performance of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis featuring the Royal Philharmonic orchestra and the London Philharmonic Choir is to be shown Stateside by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).
The 2005 concert was staged at Cologne Cathedral as part of the
20th World Youth Day, an annual catholic festival first initiated
by Pope John Paul II in 1984.
American maestro Sir Gilbert Levine, who is making his seventh
outing on PBS, conducted the performance by international cast of
stars including American tenor Jerry Hadley, who made his final
appearance before his death in July last year.
The concert, which was previously broadcast in Europe and is
available on DVD, will be broadcast to almost 73m North Americans
throughout April and May, and again later this year.
