Royal Philharmonic Society investing in the future

UK
16 July 2008

RPS Composition Prize winner Martin Suckling

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ITS HISTORY, THE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY (RPS) HANDED OUT THREE COMPOSITION PRIZES AS A PART OF ITS COMMITMENT TO CREATING A FUTURE FOR UK MUSIC.

The recipients were Evis Sammoutis, who will write a new work for the Philharmonia Orchestra's Music of Today series; Sasha Siem, who receives the Susan Bradshaw Composers' Fund commission to write a chamber piece for next year's Cheltenham Festival and Martin Suckling, who will write a piece for Wigmore Hall.

This year, the RPS has awarded grants totaling £25,300 through various awards and bursaries. Fifteen students from major UK conservatoires shared the spoils, including David Tagg-Oram of the Royal College of Music and Luis Teo of Royal Academy of Music, who will both receive oboes thanks to a special award in memory of Lady Evelyn Barbarolli - widow of late conductor Sir John Barbirolli - with Thomas Corin of Guildhall School of Music and Drama bagging a bassoon as part of the same grant scheme.

Lady Evelyn Barbirolli, an acclaimed oboist, died in January aged 97.
