In partnership with local classical station King FM, the Seattle Opera (SO) Channel 'streams' (broadcasts) around the clock. The programming includes full-length opera recordings, interviews and an ongoing Opera A to Z section.
Rather than broadcasting different programmes every day, however, the channel's programming consists of one five-hour-long broadcast, transmitted on a loop. The programme will change every two weeks. Its inaugural stream includes a recorded performance of Pagliacci, together with a preview of the company's own production of the work. General director Speight Jenkins discusses the artistic decisions behind the production and interviews its stars.
King FM programming director Bryan Lowe said the project was part of the station's campaign to cater for 'specific niches' through 'highly targeted channels'. 'The use of these new technologies is especially suited for a new generation of listeners,' he added, 'as these are pathways they already embrace.'
SO executive director Kelly Tweeddale went further: 'Although the programming is meant to complement what is currently happening on our main stage, it is also designed to appeal to a broad audience interested in learning more about opera in general.'
