Big Noise
The winner of a 2003 Borletti-Buitoni fellowship, this
Argentina-born cello dream is well on her way to becoming the
golden girl of the strings world. A former pupil of David Geringas
in Berlin, she was frequently giving recitals around Europe even in
her student days.
Gabetta's recording debut on Sony BMG, released in early 2007,
was a disc of music by Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saëns and Ginastera.
Hot on its heels, Il Progetto Vivaldi - 'The Vivaldi
Project' - followed a couple of months later.
For this recording Gabetta has chosen five concertos by Vivaldi
(not all of them originally for cello). Probably composed after
1723, they are notable for their virtuosity, stirring tempos and
graceful cantilenas. Gabetta is accompanied on the disc by one of
the best-known Italian early music ensembles, the Sonatori de la
Gioiosa Marca.
Gabetta has already lifted prizes at many prestigious international
competitions, including the International Music Competition in
Lausanne. Her greatest triumph came back in 1998 at the toughest of
them all: the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.
In 2004, sunny Sol was awarded the prestigious Credit Suisse Young
Artist Award, which included a concert with the Vienna Philharmonic
and Valery Gergiev at the Lucerne Festival.
