Stage isn't set for next NYC Opera season
NEW YORK CITY OPERA’S 2008-09 SEASON WILL BE SLIGHTLY LESS SUBSTANTIAL THAN NORMAL, AS IT INCLUDES NOT A SINGLE STAGED OPERA.
Because of renovations to its home, the New York State Theater, the company will perform in venues across the city, with operatic content limited to two unstaged performances of Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra.
The programming also features a larger proportion of lectures, opera films and panel discussions than anticipated; in December officials said they hoped to put on four semi-staged operas.
According to board chair Susan Baker, next year's budget will be $32m (£16.28m) - 25 per cent less than usual. Gérard Mortier will take over as general manager for the 2009-10 season.
