THE BERLIN STAATSOPER'S COURAGEOUS STAGING OF TCHAIKOVSKY'S EUGENE ONEGIN RECEIVED BOOS AND CATCALLS AT ITS PREMIERE ON 27 SEPTEMBER.
In front of an audience that included German chancellor Angela Merkel, conductor Daniel Barenboim had to wait patiently until the cries of 'I'm bored!' and 'Shut up!' had subsided.
Tenor Rolando Villazón was applauded for his performance
but the production, by renowned Brecht devotee Achim Freyer, was
criticised for its staging, in which the main cast had their
movements restricted to
puppet-like gestures, a lavish ball had no dancing and the duel
scene ended with no one fighting each other.
