Tesco bids for slice of Apple’s market

Tesco Digital, a Windows-only service, will be the first to offer
music in an unprotected, DRM-free format to UK customers, enabling
them to copy the tracks they purchase.
Major record labels have pledged their support to the store,
offering a combined total of 3.3m songs - 1.6m of which will be
compatible with portable devices such as iPods and mobile phones.
Exact costs are yet to be announced but Tesco claims tracks will be
'competitively priced' and will vary depending on the
artist. The store will also offer TV, film and computer games
products, with Clubcard points available on all purchases.
'We wanted to create an exciting and easy-to-use entertainment
shop that Tesco customers of all ages and technical ability can use
and trust,' says the supermarket's commercial director
Graham Harris.
Tesco Digital is likely to replace the group's existing Tesco
Downloads service when it launches in May.
