Covering 500 year of musical history over six CDs, this is the
second part of an impressive endeavour by the BBC to educate us all
on the past millennium of music.
Volume two focuses on the second half of the 19th century,
beginning with Brahms and Schumann, while the final CD of the set
takes us from the Sixties to the modern day. Impressively this
never becomes boring despite what seems on the surface to be
slightly dry subject matter.
The way in which everything is covered in so much detail is
fantastic for music lovers, although sometimes there is the
slightly teeth-gnashing moments when you wish James Naughtie would
just shut up and let you hear a whole piece instead of stopping and
explaining after every section.
The inclusion of actors playing different composers perhaps sounds
a bit corny and some would say unnecessary, but it does seem to
bring a nice tone to the whole thing, making it that bit more
informal and comfortable to listen to.
Music students will find no end to the useful information and
classical music fans will find the information fascinating.
Everyone will learn something new from this series. Both enjoyable
and educational (a rare thing), this is a must for all die hard
music fans and students. Hannah Sheerin
