Turkey initiates its first international violin contest

The inaugural International Nuri Iyicil Violin Competition - devised by Iyicil's students and organised by the TEV educational foundation and the State Conservatory of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (MSGSU), where he was a professor - will take place at the CRR Concert Hall in Istanbul from 20-28 October.
Registration for the event concluded earlier this month, with young musicians aged between 16 and 30 from around the world set to take part. A top prize of $10,000 (£5,000) is up for grabs. Second prize is $7,500 and third $5,000, with various special awards also on offer.
The contest will be chaired by Cigdem Iyicil, wife of the late violinist.
'I strongly believe that this event will be a befitting ceremony to commemorate professor Iyicil, who put endless time and effort for the improvement of music education in Turkey,' said MSGSU director Mesut Iktu. 'I wish all the best for all the contestants of the inaugural session of this international contest and hope that it will be a satisfactory experience to be remembered for all.'
