Adding a touch of oriental spice to the classical guitar, Xuefei
Yang became the first Chinese guitarist to study in the west when
she was accepted on a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in
2000.
Yang was born in Beijing. She started playing the guitar at the age
of seven and when she was 10 she began taking lessons from Chen
Zhi, a professor of classical guitar at the Beijing Central
Conservatoire.
Since coming to England she has played at Wigmore Hall and the
Queen Elizabeth Hall, had music commissioned for her by the Park
Lane Group and appeared on Radio 3 as part of the BBC Proms London
Composer Portrait with Michael Berkeley.
John Williams was once so impressed after hearing her play that he
gave her one of his own guitars. Bit of a crush, perhaps?
