Big Noise

Yevgeny Sudbin has hardly been out of the studio since signing a five-year contract with BIS in 2005. He's done Scarlatti, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Medtner, and his latest disc explores the works of Alexander Scriabin.

Not bad for a 27-year-old whose family was so poor when his parents left Russia in the 1980s that they found themselves living in the crowded basement of a converted hospital building in Berlin.

Born in St Petersburg in 1980, Sudbin has lived in London since 1997, where he studies with Christopher Elton at the Royal Academy of Music. He has won prizes at various international competitions and performed extensively throughout Germany, the UK, Italy, Switzerland, France and the USA.

'Both my parents are pianists and I grew up hearing them practicing,' he told Muso. 'I really wanted to play. When I was about four or five I was sitting improvising, and my mother noticed that I had perfect pitch. She took me to a music teacher and I made rapid progress. I auditioned for the specialist music school in St Petersburg and was accepted, and from there things went quickly.'
